How Faith Transformed the Way I Care for My Family’s Health

A journey toward faith-centered wellness, simple routines, and graceful motherhood

It was early on a Saturday morning when I woke up to a sound I knew all too well—the unmistakable noise of total chaos. Yelling. Crying. Accusations flying over a video game that, in the grand scheme of things, meant absolutely nothing. I dragged myself out of bed, already exhausted, and before I knew it, I was yelling too.

That’s when the guilt set in.

As I watched my children offer half-hearted apologies, I felt that familiar sting of guilt. Once again, my own stress and exhaustion had hijacked the moment. Instead of responding with patience and wisdom, I had reacted out of frustration—and it was clear that my approach wasn’t bringing peace to our home or nourishing their hearts.

Desperate to find a way to help them get along and treat each other with love and respect, I turned to the Lord in prayer. When my heart finally felt at peace and I could breathe and think again, I was able to recognize we needed a new routine.

That moment was a huge turning point for me-not just in my parenting, but in how I began to understand health in our home. I realized that true family wellness wasn’t just about the foods we eat or how well we sleep, but about the spiritual and emotional rhythms we build into our days.

Why Health Isn’t Just Physical

As parents I firmly believe we have been blessed with the greatest gift God could ever give. We have been blessed with the awesome responsibility of looking after His precious angels. But it is not enough just to nurture their little bodies. Through faith-based routines and discipline, we are also called to nurture their minds. We are called to lead spiritually and help them grow in their relationship with the Lord.

“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

-Matthew 4:4

And in one of my kiddos’ favorite verses:

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.”

Philippians 4:8

Our bodies are gifts not projects, and health is about honoring God, not controlling outcomes.

A Simple Faith-Based Morning Routine

With the goal of starting our Saturday mornings in peace rather than calamity, my husband and I sat down together to create this new simple morning routine. This routine isn’t meant to be a formula, but an example of what works for our family in this season.

  • Get dressed (PJs either folded and put away in drawers or in dirty laundry).
  • Make beds
  • Brush teeth and hair
  • Eat breakfast
  • 20 mins of morning bible reading
  • Journaling (this can either be a reflection on what they read, a prayer for the day, or what the actual reading was about)

Since all kids are different (my youngest is an aspiring perfectionist and his big sister is a free-spirited fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants kind of gal) and the goal is to develop holistically healthy routines rather than achieve new standards of perfection, the above list is not required to be done in order.

What is important to us is that they complete all of the tasks in their morning routine, with a happy heart (no grumbling or groaning), and that they put forth their best effort. If one of them forgets something on the list a gentle reminder, extending grace rather than a harsh word which could lead to a feeling of guilt over their forgetfulness gets them right back on track while allowing them to maintain their happy hearts.

Redefining Family Health Through Faith

In addition to a healthy faith-based morning routine, I do my best to nourish them through healthy food, an adequate amount of rest, and instilling the importance of proper hygiene. Lastly and very near to my heart, I try my hardest every day to remind myself that those sweet little babies are so much more important than any task on my daily chore list.

I try to listen intently to every little story they want to share, observe every act of silliness they want me to witness or “really cool” thing they want to show me, and to tell them how much they are loved every chance I get because along with spiritual health, emotional health is the all-too-often overlooked most fulfilling and longest lasting kind of health.

My Background

I am a former CMA turned dental hygienist with almost 20 years of combined experience in the medical and dental fields. I’m also a mother of three amazing kiddos (two boys and a girl), ages 18, 10 and 9. Of all of the job titles I’ve ever held, I can honestly say that motherhood has been both the most challenging and the most rewarding.

I am what I consider to be early on my journey of faith-based parenting and family health. My family has attended church regularly for the past several years but have only recently found real fellowship in a church that we consider to be “home” about a year and a half ago. In that time, I’ve received some wonderful recommendations for books on faith-based parenting, as well as picked up some very helpful advice from some very wise mamas within our church family.

With my combined knowledge of clinical health and real family life, and my eagerness to continue to learn and grown in faith, my hope is that I am able to pass along all of the most valuable tips and tricks that I’ve learned to help others.

Why Emotional Health Matters in the Family

At the heart of everything I do as a mother is this simple truth: our children are more important than our to-do lists. More important than perfectly clean kitchens, finished laundry, or crossed-off checklists. Along with physical and spiritual health, emotional health—the feeling of being seen, heard, and deeply loved—is one of the most fulfilling and longest-lasting forms of wellness we can offer our families.
